We recently received an automated message in our voicemail from someone identifying themselves as Rex Davis. The voice said:This is Rex Davis this is not a sales call, have a "responsible" adult call me at 800-363-0102.Being the curious bunch, we decided to call them to find out what this was all about. Oh, and we also decided to record it!One of my favorite parts of the exchange is when she says that Rex is on the phone. Then she later tells me that there is no Rex. Nice! They ended up being a collection agency... [Read the full story]

Before I joined the team here at Sitening, I was tapped for a freelance project running the social network for the production company behind the new X Files movie, which proved to be a big hit amongst the fan community. Somewhere down along the way I was asked for ideas in naming the box set version of the DVD, which was a big thrill for me as a fan when the studio decided to go with one of the suggestions that came out of a brainstorming session I had with another person on the project. With the street date of the DVD... [Read the full story]

I recently started using a new service called CrossBrowserTesting, and it's so incredibly awesome I felt compelled to write a review.  First some background...Browser compatibility is a difficult challenge for all web designers and developers.  The process of debugging HTML, CSS, or Javascript problems that only occur on specific platforms is both tedious and frustrating.  At Sitening we run either Parallels or VMWare on our laptops so we can launch Windows and test the sites we're working on.  Unfortunately,... [Read the full story]

Bounce rates affecting rankings? Or SEO for SEO’s sake?

Over at SEO Black Hat, QuadsZilla demonstrates correlation between traffic, specifically Google traffic, and bounce rate, claiming that bounce rate is being used to determine quality and factoring into rankings. Except his or her graphs show direct, rather than inverse, relationships between traffic and bounce rate. In other words, in those graphs, on days when Google traffic (and traffic overall) was down, the bounce rate was down, too. This runs counter to what one might expect if bounce rate were being used to determine... [Read the full story]

Lat week I sat on a panel at Fisk University discussing the future of media and how what journalism students need to know in order to get a job.  In the midst of the discussion it dawned on me that the students we were talking to have a slim chance at getting a job after graduation.  It’s sad but true, media companies are downsizing every day, so what is an experienced media professional (it’s not just journalists) let alone a student with no experience supposed to do?  Become an Entrepreneur. Google is calling this feature SearchWiki. According to the Google Help Center article on SearchWiki, your modified results persist whenever you are signed in to Google and search for those same terms.Naturally, this feature has implications for both search engine optimization and user experience. Astronaut Loses Toolbag in Space

November 19, 2008

The briefcase-sized tool bag drifted away from astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper on Tuesday as she cleaned and lubed a gummed-up joint on a wing of solar panels on the space station. She and fellow astronaut Stephen Bowen were midway through the first of four spacewalks planned for the mission. The tool bag was one of the largest items ever lost by a spacewalker.  Read More →

Think of it as Twitter for internal purposes. While at the moment... [Read the full story]
