It’s A Wonderful Life – Live Radio Play

State of the Art Lecture: Dawoud Bey
Representing the Human Subject

Bey is a Distinguished College Artist and photography professor at Columbia College in Chicago. His work has been part of numerous exhibitions worldwide. This lecture is presented in conjunction with “The Best of Photography and Film from the George Eastman House Collection” exhibition on view at the Frist Center through January 25, 2009.

2nd Annual Artisan Fair

Metro Christmas Tree Lighting
Fri, Dec 5. Public Square. Corner of 2nd and Union. 6 pm. Free. Mayor Karl Dean will launch Nashville’s holiday season by lighting the city’s 40-foot Norway Spruce. Entertainment by a quartet from the Barbershop Harmony Society and Phil Stacey, American Idol Finalist and the Nashville Christmas Parade’s grand marshal. The mayor will flip the switch to the tree and the six wreaths decorating the Historic Courthouse and Founders Tower around 6:20 pm.
Fri, Dec 5. Star line: Juvenile Justice Center. Course: throughout downtown. Finish line: LP Field. 356-8130. 6:30 pm. This 5K run/walk kicks off the Nashville Christmas Parade. Since its inception in 1980 the run has raised over $500,000 for Big Brothers of Nashville. Runner registration is open through December 5. All money raised benefits Big Brothers of Nashville.
“Christmas Memories” Nashville Christmas Parade
Fri, Dec 5. Broadway and 2nd Avenue. 7 pm. Free. The 56th Annual Nashville Christmas Parade celebrating Nashville’s rich history of musical entertainment. The parade boasts twenty-seven decorated floats, large helium balloons like the Macy’s Parade in NYC, holiday lights illuminating the night sky, Santa Claus, and eleven high school marching bands, plus TSU’s marching band filling the streets with magical sounds of the holiday season. The route begins at 6th and Broadway, goes east to 2nd Avenue and then crosses the Woodland Street Bridge to LP Field. This year’s grand marshal is American Idol finalist and recording artist Phil Stacey. NOTE: road closures, see article below.
Holiday Concert: Blair Children’s Suzuki Violin and Cello Program
Sat, Dec 6. Frist Center for the Visual Arts. 919 Broadway. 244-3340. 2 pm. Free. A performance by the Suzuki String Program at The Blair School of Music. Fifty young violin and cello students will present a concert featuring traditional holiday carols as well as classical works by Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi.

Most galleries serve free wine and other refreshments. Two free shuttles provide transportation among the galleries from 6 pm to 10 pm. See the shuttle map and gallery listing here. artEMBRACE along 5th Avenue North
Sat, Dec 6. 219 5th Avenue North and 500 Church Street. 6 – 9 pm. Free. Enjoy art by students in YMCA’s artEMBRACE program, the afterschool arts enrichment component of YMCA Fun Company. The students are from Bordeaux Elementary, Creswell Magnet, Smyrna Primary, and John Coleman Elementary. Works are displayed in two empty storefronts along 5th Avenue. Free art classes for children will be available from 6:30 – 8:30 pm at the 219 5th Ave N building. At 6 pm a West African Drumming performance will occur on 5th Avenue between Church Street and the Arcade.
